This is Jessica. She is a medial laboratory technologist in pathology.

“Since the COVID pandemic came about, pathology ground to a halt. Elective surgeries have been cancelled, which in turn leads to less samples being processed.

I volunteered to test COVID samples on a new machine we acquired, and that is what I’m doing now. I thought why not do something that can help our community. I also just thought it was a good learning opportunity.

I had to learn how to pipette properly, organize the specimens accordingly, decontaminate certain things like our pipettes or the safety cabinet. It was all new, totally different from pathology. But it feels really rewarding at the end of the day.

We are really behind the scenes.

My family and friends don’t really understand that we are the ones giving the results to doctors and they are making their decisions based on our skill.”
